If I remember correctly from my cognitive psychology class, it's not just that we read whole words, but that we read in context. We automatically put in words that make sense; granted it would be harder in this case with surrounding words mixed as well. I know while reading everyone's eyes jump back a few times. The quicker readers' eyes jump back less. With something like this, you're slower reading because you do have to work to read it. It may not be too difficult, but you are still struggling a bit more than usual.
